Current Wines on Offer
At Catanese Wines, we currently offer the following wines:
2022 Pinot Gris - Grapes were sourced from Portarlington in Victoria, and picked at a ripeness which displays ripe fruit flavours like honeydew melon, mango and candied fruits. The wine is crisp and fresh and has intense flavours and mouthfeel due to two months on gross lees. 12.4% Alcohol content.
2022 Cabernet sauvignon - This Cabernet sauvignon is made with grapes sourced from the cool climate region of Ararat. The expression is milder due to the cool climate, with milder tannins, body and alcohol, however, fruit flavours are aplenty. The wine is well balanced with flavours of toasty oak, plums, dark berries and dried herbs noticeable on the palate. A gentle elegant expression with great flavour. 12.5% Alcohol content.
2023 Pinot Noir – The grapes were handpicked from the cool coastal region of Portarlington. A light bodied wine with 10% whole bunch, unoaked, lightly filtered and on lees until bottling. The wine displays the pure fruit expressions of the variety, with pleasant floral aromas of cherry blossoms and violets, and flavours of cherries, strawberries and raspberries on the palate. 13.0% Alcohol content.
2023 Shiraz – Grapes were handpicked from the Heathcote region. This is a more delicate and refined expression of the grape variety, with fine smooth tannins and balanced acidity due to a longer maturation period, and a cooler and wetter climate experienced during this year. Dark red berries are apparent on the nose and notes of dark chocolate, cedar, black currants and dark plums on the palate. 15.0% Alcohol content.
Our product range will be expanding in the near future.
Winemaking Philosophy
All wines crafted at Catanese Wines commence by having a firm grasp and understanding of the grape variety used to make the wine. Different grapes vary in ripening periods, tannin concentrations, their balance of acids and sugars, and the flavour compounds they produce, amongst other things. By understanding each and every variety we work with, we can determine; the optimum picking period which best expresses the flavours and balance in the wine; the most suitable yeast strains to utilise for maximum flavour production; the best extraction techniques to employ; and what maturation vessels best suit the wine variety.
At Catanese Wines we believe in letting the wine progress naturally through its development stages with as little intervention as possible. We are also very strong believers in good hygiene practices to ensure our wines are full of the goodness and flavours the varieties should express and free of undesirable faults. This is ensured through thorough sterilisation of all wine making equipment and regular analysis of our wines and winery facility.
Crafted with Passion & Expertise
My passion for wine was created over time due to my heritage, my artistic nature and my love of science, which are all encompassed in winemaking. With a background in firstly Chemistry and then Tiling, my wine journey began in 2018 when I decided to embark on a Viticulture and Winemaking degree at LaTrobe University, in order to gain the essential knowledge required to become a good winemaker. By the end of the year I commenced working in the Yarra Valley for a reputable winery. I worked my first vintage in 2019 and have worked every vintage since, while also making my own small batches of wines every year since 2018. The expertise and experience I have gained over the years is expressed in the wines I produce.
I am forever grateful to the individuals who have given me the opportunities to further my knowledge and experience in order to improve my winemaking skills over the years.
